“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,-That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness”.
These words as profound as they sound, are also a reflection of the events that are taking place in the world today, giving credence to this document that it is in a way one of the classiest political documents that have been published till date. I don’t know what effect this had on the American people at the time when these fiercely independent people who had great pride on their origins, had to undergo so that they were induced to cut themselves off from their roots. It is as if a tree had rotted beyond repair and thus in order to survive and just as the survival instinct takes over, the people of America had to cut off the rotten ties they have with the Great Britain and start afresh all over.
Let us now examine what these lines quoted above from the declaration of independence mean, and I am sure that tons of pages of commentary may already have been written on this paragraph, since this document being a classic document of the human history; however, it needs to be reinterpreted again and again so that ‘we don’t forget’. We as people don’t forget that there is still hope around the corner and don’t throw ourselves in the abyss of dejection and despair. The truths that all men have been created equal, that they have a right to life, right to liberty and a right towards pursuit of their happiness have been described as self-evident in the declaration of independence, that these things are beyond debate, that nothing else can take their place. Why then in America itself there is so much inequality, was it to be understood that this declaration was not for the African Americans or for the aborigines? How does society react and adapt itself when a large number of men struggle for their right towards pursuit of happiness and fight for their equality, since attaining happiness in life is a natural course of event in any individual’s life and everyone wants to be on an equal footing while dealing with other individuals in a society, from where this utopia will come, from where such a balance can be achieved and conflict be avoided? How then when men compromise with some of their natural freedom, and in place of the natural law of God the Almighty adjust themselves to the laws created by men and then go on with their lives thinking that they will achieve one day everything in the form of equality, happiness and a safe and a sound future for their progeny?
All these questions have risen in the minds of the philosophers from time immemorial and in this context isn’t it necessary that we as men give a rethink to the declaration of independence keeping in mind the events that are taking place around the world? Doesn’t everything revolve around this, and while we see when the state fails to provide protection to the right to life of men that it rules, and resultantly the entire social structure collapses, just in the case of Iraq and Syria and to a major extent an entire people of a certain religious affinity had to escape religious persecution from Kashmir? What has such a kind of collapse led to during such chaos and anarchy? No wonder all this has led to bloodshed and retribution…..why then the Jewish people have to resort to such harsh measure against the Palestinians since their right of life has been denied to them, be it some historical wrong committed against them, noting the genocide perpetrated by Hitler in the name of ‘final solution’? Final solution- did I read it right? What the Hell was Hitler thinking about when he inflicted such grave wounds on the race of men in the name of racial purity and then justifying it as a final solution? I don’t know how could the German people get seduced by such gimmicks that was aided by his propaganda minister named Gobbles…..are men so naive?
To secure such rights among men and to reconcile such ‘conflicts’ when everyone wants to seek safety and happiness for themselves and near and dear ones, Governments were created? Then I fail to understand how the people and rulers of Great Britain be such harsh to their own people who had immigrated to the newfoundland named America? And in turn how could the American people have been so cruel to the aboriginal people who are also known as Red Indians? Why did humanity lose it way so many times in history and why we always fail to learn from history? There are no logical answers to such questions but it is self-evident that Governments have been created so that each and every individual can rest in peace that his rights towards life, happiness, property and equality besides his other counterparts will be protected. And when rot becomes so much that the entities in the form of Government cannot perform such functions efficiently or utterly fail in this regard, heads do roll and governments should be shown the door, just in the case of India by the exercise of right to vote in the form of Democratic and free and fair elections or in the case of Pakistan, coup by the people that is a developing situation in that particular country.
Men should remember that it is in their interest not to cross their limits and when men become drunk with the poison potion of power, fame, authority and mass appeal, they can commit great digressions just like Hitler did when he was at the heights of his popularity, and then committed such unspeakable sins that send shivers down my spine. People should recognize these signs and whenever they feel such a kind of situation is developing, they should nip the problem in the bud itself. Men should only entrust such kind of authority to other men (read leaders), those whom they feel are able to digest such a kind of magic potion.
